A window cleaning robot for outside windows lets you clean high exterior glass from inside the house by reaching around and sticking the robot on, according to MW Technology, a YouTube tech channel that tested the W2S Pro Omni on a dozen exterior windows, which used the method on windows it had no ladder tall enough to reach.
The key is a model with strong suction, backup power and a tethered station, plus a few safety habits. Here is how reviewers did it, with Amazon prices checked October 16, 2026.

Why exterior glass is where these robots shine
Every long-term reviewer reached the same conclusion. VittorTech said the W3 Omni makes the most sense on single-hung exterior windows, third-floor glass and condo balconies, and that those windows are the most satisfying to watch because they are much dirtier. Erin Lawrence said she used to need a ladder for her high exterior windows and now sticks the robot to a bottom corner she can reach and lets it climb. MW Technology cleaned a tall exterior window that had not been washed in more than four years in what it called pretty much one run.
Step by step: cleaning an outside window from inside
- Set the station flat and secure. MW Technology said the W2S PRO’s station has a suction cup on the bottom for a smooth surface; if that will not hold, tie the included tether to a table or other stable object.
- Clip the anchor cable. Erin Lawrence clips hers to a railing or heavy furniture.
- Fill the solution and dampen the pad. MW Technology wrings the pad so it is damp, not dripping, so it attaches properly.
- Open the window, reach around and press the robot to the glass, then switch on suction and wait for the voice confirmation before letting go.
- Let it run, then retrieve it from its start point. It holds on for up to 30 minutes when done or low on battery, ManShed and VittorTech said.
What about second-floor windows?
VittorTech said the station should always stay flat, so a second-floor window works if you have a flat spot to set the station within 5.5 m of the glass. In his example, he cleaned the window from inside. MW Technology said that by tethering the station inside an apartment, the W2S PRO could be used in high-rise situations.
Safety features to look for
- Strong suction: ECOVACS lists 10,000Pa on the W2S PRO Omni; ManShed cited up to 8,000Pa on the W3; Erin Lawrence cited 5,500Pa on the W2 PRO.
- Backup hold: about 30 minutes on the glass after a low-battery warning, per Erin Lawrence and MW Technology.
- A weighted, tethered station: VittorTech said the W3’s station weighs about 10 kg, more than the robot.
- Anti-fall cable: ManShed said the W3 detects a drop and tightens its safety cable, like a climbing belay.
- Multi-stage protection: ECOVACS lists 12-stage protection on the W2 PRO Omni.
Tips for dirtier outside glass
VittorTech said you may want to run it twice on exterior windows near construction dust or during heavy pollen season. MW Technology used the deep clean preset and the app’s spot and remote modes for stubborn areas, and said letting the robot make a couple of passes turned a very dirty window relatively clean. It said a few fine corner areas may still show lines.
Weather and glass limits
VittorTech said ECOVACS advises against using the W3 below 0°C or above 40°C and on glass with heavy condensation or oil. Glass must be flat and free of seams, and divided panes need the robot moved to each section, MW Technology said. Minor water marks can be wiped with a microfiber cloth, VittorTech added.
Which robot for outside windows?
For the most reach and suction, the ECOVACS WINBOT W2S PRO Omni ($499.00). For the least hands-on work across a lot of glass, the ECOVACS WINBOT W3 Omni ($699.99). For a lower price with the same battery station and tether concept, the ECOVACS WINBOT W2 PRO Omni ($379.00). Plug-in compact models such as the WINBOT MINI 2 are better suited to indoor glass. Tip from Erin Lawrence: before cleaning, hold the robot over a seam or edge and switch on suction to check that it holds before you let go.
