3D printed dust collection parts fix the most common small-shop problem: hoses that do not fit your tools. Artisan Made, a woodworking YouTube channel, says he printed more than 50 hours of dust collection files, including a two-part threaded cyclone that needed no supports.
When that cyclone did not fit his hoses, he printed his own adapters. Evan Monsma, a YouTube channel about shop projects, went further and designed a bayonet-style universal shop vac port in free Fusion 360.
Here is what to print, how to size adapters, and how to seal them.

- Shop vac to tool port adapters (sander, planer, track saw)
- Quick-connect and bayonet fittings
- Ball-valve or slide blast gates
- Bucket-lid cyclone separators
- Hose hangers and wall mounts
- Drill dust collectors for wall drilling
How to Size a Shop Vac Adapter
- Measure the outside diameter of the tool port and the inside of your hose with calipers.
- Print a short test ring first.
- Taper the ends slightly for a friction fit.
- Note your hose: Artisan Made used a 2-1/4 in Ridgid hose and a 1-1/2 in hose, which needed separate adapters.
Sealing and Strength
Artisan Made sealed his cyclone to the bucket lid with silicone and used self-fusing silicone tape on duct joints. It seals without sticky residue and is easy to remove. He warns that printed blast gates can crack if screws are driven with high torque.
| Use | Filament | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor holders and organizers | PLA | Easy, stiff, cheap |
| Parts that get dropped or flexed | PETG | Tougher, less brittle |
| Hot garage, truck or van | ASA (or ABS) | Higher heat resistance; needs an enclosed printer |
| Soft jaws, grips, non-marring tips | TPU | Rubber-like, will not scratch |

What YouTube Creators Found About 3D Printed Dust Collection
These are findings from popular YouTube videos, paraphrased from their transcripts and credited. They are the creators’ experiences and claims, not my test results.
- Artisan Made (Artisan Made: “3D Printed Dust Collection Upgrades”) printed a two-part threaded cyclone that needed no supports. It didn’t fit his hoses, so he made his own adapters, then tested it on dust from his table saw.
- Evan Monsma (Evan Monsma: “Designing a universal shop-vac port”) felt the DeWalt connector was unreliable and not cross-brand, so he designed a bayonet-style universal port in free Fusion 360. He learned that his first tolerances were off, and that lugs printed in the wrong orientation could snap along the layer lines.

Frequently Asked Questions
What filament is best for shop vac adapters?
PETG: tough and slightly flexible for friction fits. PLA works for low-wear parts.
Do 3D printed cyclones work?
Creators report that bucket cyclones catch much of the dust before the vac. Results depend on the design and sealing.
How do I make an adapter airtight?
Print 3+ walls, then seal joints with silicone tape or caulk.
Are static sparks a risk?
Plastic dust systems can build static. Ground long runs and never vacuum up flammable material.
