Heated Mattress Pad vs Space Heater: Which Keeps You Warmer for Less?

Heated mattress pad vs space heater: running cost per night, comfort and safety features, plus Bedsure, BedJet, Dreo and De’Longhi picks, priced Oct 16, 2026.

In the heated mattress pad vs space heater comparison, a heated pad costs far less to run overnight because it warms only your bed: Bedsure lists its dual-control pad at 100 W per side, while a typical space heater draws about 1,500 W, so eight hours costs roughly $0.29 versus $2.20 at the U.S. average electricity price.

A space heater still wins when you need the whole room warm, for getting dressed or working. Here is the math, the trade-offs and the models worth considering, with Amazon prices checked October 16, 2026.

The running-cost math

Running cost is watts times hours. Bedsure lists its king pad with dual 100 W controllers, so both sides on for eight hours use at most 1.6 kWh, about $0.29 a night at the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s average residential price of 18.31 cents per kWh, or $8.79 a month. One side alone is about $0.15 a night. A 1,500 W space heater running eight hours uses 12.0 kWh, about $2.20 a night or $65.92 a month. Both figures are maximums: thermostats and lower heat levels cut them.

Scenario (8 hours)EnergyPer nightPer 30 nights
Heated pad, one side (100 W)0.8 kWh$0.15$4.39
Heated pad, both sides (200 W)1.6 kWh$0.29$8.79
Space heater on low (750 W)6.0 kWh$1.10$32.96
Space heater on high (1,500 W)12.0 kWh$2.20$65.92

Why a pad is cheaper

A space heater has to warm the air of an entire room, which then loses heat through walls and windows. A heated mattress pad puts a small amount of heat right where your body is. Bedsure says each of its controllers consumes about one-thirtieth the energy of traditional heaters. Multnomah County’s weatherization program notes that all electric resistance heaters are 100% efficient, so the savings come entirely from heating a smaller space, not from a more efficient element.

When a space heater makes more sense

  • You need the room warm while awake, reading or getting dressed.
  • More than one person or a pet shares the room.
  • You want to take the chill off before bed and then turn it off.
  • You are heating a home office or nursery rather than a bed.

If you go the heater route, the French Glow found Dreo’s tower designs quiet enough for bedrooms, and Dreo lists the Dreo 30-inch Space Heater at a claimed 25 dB. The De’Longhi Dragon Digital oil-filled radiator is silent because it has no fan, which suits light sleepers.

Heated mattress pad features to look for

  • Dual controls for couples who prefer different temperatures; both the Bedsure Heated Mattress Pad (King, dual control) and the Serta pad list dual-zone control on queen and larger sizes.
  • Auto shut-off timers: Bedsure defaults to eight hours with 12 timer settings; Serta offers a 1–12 hour timer.
  • Preheat: Bedsure lists a preheat function to warm the bed before you get in.
  • Safety certification: both Bedsure and Serta list ETL certification.
  • Deep pockets: both fit mattresses up to 18 inches, the brands say.

The premium option: BedJet

The BedJet climate system + Cloud Sheet (Queen/Full) is a different approach: it blows heated or cooled air into the bed through a special Cloud Sheet. BedJet says it warms the bed 15 times faster with air and markets it as an alternative to electric blankets, and it also cools for hot sleepers. At $739.00 it costs far more upfront than a pad or heater, so it suits people who want year-round temperature control in bed.

Combine them for the best of both

Many people use both: a space heater for 20 to 30 minutes before bed with a thermostat, then a heated pad overnight. At the EIA average price, 30 minutes of a 1,500 W heater costs about $0.14, and the pad covers the rest of the night for pennies. Turning down the central thermostat at night while the bed stays warm saves more.

Safety tips

  • Follow the pad maker’s instructions; Serta says not to leave its controller covered while in use.
  • Use the auto shut-off timer rather than running all night at full heat.
  • For space heaters, look for tip-over and overheat protection and keep bedding and curtains clear.
  • Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet.

Which should you buy?

If the goal is staying warm in bed cheaply, a heated mattress pad wins by a wide margin on running cost. If you need the whole room warm, choose a space heater with a thermostat; see Best Space Heater for a Large Room and Oil-Filled Radiator vs Ceramic Heater.
