GoveeLife vs GE Opal: Which Nugget Ice Maker Wins?

GoveeLife vs GE Opal: ice speed, output, noise, retention, tanks, apps and warranty from a three-machine test, plus Project Farm’s Opal results.

In GoveeLife vs GE Opal testing, the GoveeLife Smart Nugget Ice Maker Pro made more ice per hour, ran quieter and held ice slightly better than the GE Profile Opal 2.0, according to Ben’s Appliances and Junk, an appliance-testing YouTube channel, in a video sponsored by GoveeLife, though several margins were close.

The Opal has its own strong record: it won a 10-machine test by Project Farm, a YouTube channel that runs side-by-side product tests. Here is how the two compare head to head, with Amazon prices checked October 16, 2026.

The test

Ben’s Appliances and Junk ran the GoveeLife Pro, the GE Opal 2.0 and a third machine, from Ecozy, side by side for three days, measuring time to first ice, hourly production over six hours, noise, ice retention and bin capacity. He disclosed that GoveeLife sponsored the video and said the company let him run the benchmarks he wanted. Keep that in mind, and weigh his results alongside Project Farm’s independent Opal test.

Ice speed and output

Both machines dropped first ice within about five and a half minutes. Over six hours of hourly weigh-ins, the GoveeLife Smart Nugget Ice Maker Pro averaged just under 2 lb an hour versus about 1.44 lb for the Opal. GoveeLife lists up to 60 lb a day; GE lists the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra at 38 lb a day and 1.6 lb per hour under its test conditions. In Project Farm’s separate test, the Opal made ice at 9.4 grams per minute, the fastest of his ten machines, and he saw ice start at about eight minutes.

Ice quality

Ben said the GoveeLife’s pebble nugget ice looked nearly identical to the Opal’s. Project Farm gave the Opal the best possible ice-quality score, calling its ice very soft and chewable with consistent pellet shape and texture.

Noise

Ben said countertop nugget makers are louder than you might expect because their fans run constantly while making ice, though dumping nugget ice is quiet compared with bullet machines. The GoveeLife was quietest in his box test. Project Farm measured the Opal at 51.3 dB, third quietest in his lineup, and GoveeLife lists its Pro at as low as 40 dB with a noise-reduction system.

Water capacity and refills

Ben called water capacity the bane of his tests and said both side tanks were huge usability benefits. The GoveeLife’s 4.9-liter tank is about 1.2 gallons versus just under one gallon for the Opal’s 3.75 liters, by his figures. GoveeLife says one fill yields over 15 lb of ice. If you want a bigger Opal tank, GE sells the GE Profile Opal Ultra with 1-gal XL side tank with a 1-gallon side tank.

Bin size and retention

Both bins held about 3.1 lb when Ben let them fill completely; Project Farm measured 3.35 lb in his Opal. For retention, Ben put a pound of frozen ice in each idle machine for an hour: GoveeLife lost 8% and the Opal 12%, which he said was arguably within his scale’s 2% accuracy. Both machines remake melted ice; Patrick Michael said his Opal’s sensor keeps the bin fresh and full.

Cleaning

At startup, Ben said GE calls for four six-minute cleaning cycles with water and a teaspoon of bleach, draining with a standpipe after each, plus a filter cartridge replaced every three months. GoveeLife’s startup was two 10-minute cycles, and its extra drain pipes made draining easier on camera. Both include cleaning media, and both suggest cleaning about every 100 hours of operation depending on water hardness. GoveeLife lists 10-minute quick and 30-minute deep-descale modes.

Apps

Both connect over Wi-Fi to report a full bin, low water and cleaning history, Ben said. He found the GoveeLife app the most robust, with scheduling and a production journal, while GE’s SmartHQ app starts and stops ice. GE lists scheduling, maintenance alerts and Alexa and Google support for the Opal 2.0 Ultra.

Which should you buy?

  • Choose the GoveeLife Pro if you want maximum output, a larger tank and a longer warranty; Ben found it ahead in his tests.
  • Choose the GE Opal 2.0 Ultra for a proven record: it won Project Farm’s 10-machine test and has the broadest accessory support.
  • Short on space? GE’s GE Profile Opal Mini is 30% smaller.
