The best air purifier for smoke in the largest head-to-head test we found is the $180 Winix 5510. It pulled 3.9 million particles from the air in 30 minutes, according to Project Farm, a YouTube channel that buys every product it tests and runs them side by side.
That beat the original Coway Mighty, at 3.52 million particles, and a Dyson that costs about $1,200, at 3.18 million. In a separate incense smoke test, the newer Coway Airmega Mighty2 cleared the air fastest, according to HouseFresh, an air purifier review site that bought the unit with its own money.
Particles are only half of smoke. The smell comes from gases, and only a thick carbon filter can deal with those, according to Oransi, an air purifier maker that publishes buying guides on YouTube. During heavy wildfire smoke, follow your local air quality guidance.

How to size an air purifier for smoke
Two numbers matter more than the HEPA label or the square footage printed on the box. CADR, or clean air delivery rate, measures how much filtered air a purifier delivers each minute. Air changes per hour measure how often it cleans all the air in your room.
Oransi recommends a CADR of at least two-thirds of your room’s square footage, so a 300 sq ft room needs about 200 CADR. HouseFresh aims for six air changes per hour at a speed quiet enough to leave running.
Smoke particles vs. smoke smell
A purifier can clear visible smoke fast and still leave the smell behind. Most of the health concern from wildfire smoke is PM2.5, fine particles that a HEPA filter traps, Oransi says. Odor is different. Oransi says thin carbon sheets you can see through do little against gases, and HouseFresh says even 400 g of carbon falls short for serious odors. In a smoker’s room, buy the most carbon you can and ventilate when possible.
What the smoke tests showed
The findings below are paraphrased from each creator’s video and credited to them. They are the creators’ results, not mine.
- Project Farm: the Winix 5510 removed 3.9 million particles in 30 minutes, versus 3.52 million for the original Coway Mighty (about $229) and 3.18 million for a Dyson (about $1,200).
- HouseFresh: the Mighty2 cleared PM1 from a 728 cu ft room in 23 minutes at top speed, ahead of the original Mighty, the Vital 200S and the Winix 5510.
- Oransi: target PM2.5 with HEPA, size CADR to two-thirds of your square footage and use substantial carbon for odor.
Coming next: my own smoke test
I plan to burn a measured incense stick in a closed room and time how long each pick takes to bring PM2.5 back to baseline. I will post the results and a Home Smart video here. Until then, nothing on this page is a hands-on claim from me.
Air purifier for smoke: FAQ
Do air purifiers work for smoke?
Yes, for smoke particles. Both Project Farm and HouseFresh measured large drops in smoke particles in their tests. Smell is harder: Oransi says it takes a substantial carbon filter.
What CADR do I need for wildfire smoke?
Oransi recommends at least two-thirds of your room’s square footage, or about 200 CADR for a 300 sq ft room.
Will an air purifier remove cigarette smell?
Only partly. You need a thick carbon filter, and HouseFresh warns that small carbon loads won’t handle serious odors.
Should I buy a smoke filter for my Levoit?
Levoit sells Smoke Remover filters for the Vital 200S-P and Core 600S-P, which hold more carbon than the standard filter, according to HouseFresh.
