How to Choose a Whole Home Water Monitor: Clamp-On, Meter or Shutoff

How to choose a whole home water monitor: clamp-on, meter-mounted and inline shutoff types, accuracy, micro-leak checks and subscriptions, from The Hook Up and Smart Home Solver.

A whole home water monitor tracks every gallon entering your house and alerts you to leaks, and the right type depends on whether you want usage data, small-leak checks or automatic shutoff, according to The Hook Up, a smart home YouTube channel known for side-by-side measurements, who compared five of them.

This guide explains the three main types, what reviewers found with each, and how to pick one, with prices checked October 21, 2026.

Step 1: Decide what you want from a whole home water monitor

The Hook Up lists three goals: cutting your water bill by tracking use, checking plumbing for small leaks, and protecting the home with automatic shutoff. Some devices do one well; inline shutoffs do all three. He also separates these whole-home units from inexpensive puddle sensors, which only detect water in one spot.

Step 2: Choose a type

Clamp-on monitors

These attach to the outside of your main pipe and use ultrasonic sound to measure flow. Smart Home Solver, the YouTube channel run by Reed Kleinman, who has about 737,000 subscribers and covers practical home automation, installed the Hydrific Droplet and said it clamps on and plugs in, then shows flow instantly. He uses its Home Assistant integration to get notified if water runs while everyone is out, and to show running water on his dashboard so a faucet left on gets noticed. The Hook Up’s clamp-on test unit in 2021 was a different brand, the Streamlabs Monitor, which over-reported his usage by about 7 percent, so accuracy varies by product.

Meter-mounted monitors

A meter-mounted unit like the Flume Smart Water Monitor (F2X) straps to your utility meter and reads its magnetic field, running on batteries with a plug-in bridge indoors. The Hook Up found the earlier Flume 2 within 1 percent of his meter across a day and about 2 percent in a bucket test, with flow visible down to 0.1 gallons per minute. Because it sits at the meter, it sees irrigation as well as indoor use. Check meter compatibility first, and note his video flagged features moving to a paid plan.

Inline monitors with shutoff

Inline units such as the Moen Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff (3/4″) and Phyn Plus Gen 2 Smart Water Shutoff (1″) are plumbed into the main line after the main shutoff. They can close a motorized valve when they see a problem, and they run micro-leak checks by shutting the valve and watching for pressure loss. The Hook Up measured the Flo within about 1.5 percent of his meter, and its drip test found his leaking faucet. No More Leaks found Phyn’s plumbing checks gave more detailed pressure history.

Step 3: Check installation

  • Clamp-on: needs access to the main pipe before it branches, plus power nearby, The Hook Up says.
  • Meter-mounted: may require digging out the meter box; he needed a small shovel.
  • Inline shutoff: makers recommend a licensed plumber. His install took a little under an hour with a plumber friend supervising.

For inline units, match the valve to your pipe size. The Moen Flo listing linked here is the 3/4-inch model and the Phyn Plus Gen 2 listing is 1-inch; other sizes and fittings are sold separately.

Step 4: Understand learning periods and alerts

Smart monitors learn normal patterns before alerting on unusual flow. The Flo’s learning lasts about a week, according to The Hook Up and No More Leaks, and Phyn adapts over roughly 1,000 water events. Meter units may use fixed thresholds; The Hook Up’s Flume defaulted to alerts above 5 gallons per minute or after more than four hours of continuous flow, both adjustable. In his large-leak test at 3.5 gallons per minute, alerts arrived after about 20 minutes on the units that flagged it, roughly 70 gallons.

Step 5: Weigh subscriptions and smart home links

Check what is free before you buy. The Hook Up said Moen no longer requires a subscription for app features. Home Assistant users should look at Droplet, which Smart Home Solver uses with Home Assistant, and Flume, which The Hook Up says integrates with Home Assistant and SmartThings.

Whole home water monitor: which type fits

  • Renters or no plumbing changes: a clamp-on such as Droplet.
  • Irrigation-heavy homes with a compatible meter: a meter-mounted Flume.
  • Owners who want automatic protection: an inline shutoff such as Moen Flo or Phyn Plus.

Many households pair any of these with a few inexpensive puddle sensors under sinks and appliances, which Reed also recommends in the same video.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a whole home water monitor?

A device on your main line or meter that tracks all water use and alerts you to unusual flow; some models also shut the water off.

Which whole home water monitor is easiest to install?

Clamp-on models. Smart Home Solver says the Droplet clamps onto the pipe and plugs in.

Can a whole home water monitor find small leaks?

Inline units with a valve can, by closing it and checking pressure. Clamp-on and meter units cannot run that test, The Hook Up explains.

Do whole home water monitors need Wi-Fi?

Yes. The models covered here connect to Wi-Fi for app alerts.

Notes and disclosure

Note: Prices come from Amazon listings (or the maker’s own store where a product is not sold on Amazon) checked on October 21, 2026. Prices change often, so check the current listing. Flow, accuracy and leak-detection figures are the credited reviewers’ own results from their homes and plumbing; your results will vary with pressure, pipe size and fixtures. The Hook Up’s comparison dates from 2021 and No More Leaks compared the earlier Phyn Plus, so current models and subscription terms may differ. The No More Leaks video description includes a Phyn discount link. Smart Home Solver’s Droplet segment appears in a roundup in which Valerion sponsored a separate portion. The Droplet is sold by Hydrific, not on Amazon, so its price is the maker’s. Most shutoff valves should be installed by a licensed plumber.
