In the Ooni Volt 2 vs Breville Pizzaiolo matchup, the Ooni lists 100°F more heat and costs about $300 less on Amazon, while the Breville is more compact and offers finer control. That’s the picture from tests of the original Ooni Volt by America’s Test Kitchen, the cooking-test show, and Pala Pizza, a YouTube pizza channel that tested six indoor ovens side by side, plus first impressions of the Volt 2 from Bob Diff, a YouTube pizza reviewer (America’s Test Kitchen, “Ooni Volt vs. Breville Pizzaiolo: Battle Of the Pizza Ovens | Gear Heads”; Pala Pizza, “The 6 Best INDOOR Electric Pizza Ovens | Reviewed With Preheat Tests”; Bob Diff, “Ooni Volt 2 Review – Is this the Ultimate Indoor Electric Pizza Oven?”).
ATK found both ovens preheat in about 20 minutes and bake thin crust in four to five minutes, and said the 100-degree gap matters less than you’d think; it called the pizza from both “terrific” (America’s Test Kitchen, “Ooni Volt vs. Breville Pizzaiolo: Battle Of the Pizza Ovens | Gear Heads”). Pala Pizza rated the original Volt 4.8 and the Breville 4.6 out of 5 (Pala Pizza, “The 6 Best INDOOR Electric Pizza Ovens | Reviewed With Preheat Tests”).

Heat and Pizza Quality
ATK says the original Volt really did reach 850°F in about 20 minutes, versus about an hour for a steel in a home oven, while the Breville reaches 750°F in the same 20 minutes (America’s Test Kitchen, “Ooni Volt vs. Breville Pizzaiolo: Battle Of the Pizza Ovens | Gear Heads”). Both baked thin crust in four to five minutes. Tasters found the Ooni pizza a little softer and more pillowy and the Breville crust crispier, and scored performance a draw. ATK baked its thin crust at 650°F, noting 850°F is really for Neapolitan pies.
Pala Pizza measured the original Volt above its listed 850°F, and found it held stone temperature best of six ovens when baking several pizzas back to back, thanks to thick insulation (Pala Pizza, “The 6 Best INDOOR Electric Pizza Ovens | Reviewed With Preheat Tests”). His best Neapolitan settings: preheat to 800°F and turn the dial fully to the top burner right before launching, for a bake just under two minutes with even color. On the Breville he launched Neapolitans at a 700°F stone and 750°F top, and baked one in 1 minute 42 seconds with an airy crust.
Ooni Volt 2: First Impressions From Bob Diff
Bob Diff, who got early access from Ooni, ran about 14 pizzas through the Volt 2 (Bob Diff, “Ooni Volt 2 Review – Is this the Ultimate Indoor Electric Pizza Oven?”). It has presets for Neapolitan, thin and crispy, pan pizza, dough proofing, oven, broil, grill and two custom settings, plus a temperature dial, a five-level crisping control for the top element and a timer.
- New York style: the thin-and-crispy preset (660°F by default) was “extremely dialed”; his pies averaged 5.5 minutes, and recovery between bakes was manageable.
- Detroit style: on the pan preset (530°F default, raised to 560°F) recovery between bakes was about 6 1/2 minutes. He saw little advantage over a home oven for this style.
- Neapolitan: the preset defaults to 810°F, and pressing the knob for 3 seconds starts a 30-second top boost. He didn’t nail a perfect Neapolitan in five tries, though every pizza was very good.
- Noise: roughly 60 dB at the oven.
- Cleaning: run it on high for a few minutes, scrape out burnt bits the next day, and clean the glass after every use.
His verdict: “If you’re in the market for an indoor pizza oven, I do recommend this one” (Bob Diff, “Ooni Volt 2 Review – Is this the Ultimate Indoor Electric Pizza Oven?”).
Controls and Ease of Use
The Breville has presets for New York, thin crust, pan and frozen pizza, light-to-dark settings, and a manual mode with separate top and deck temperatures; its crust-only setting shuts off the middle burner and pushes power to the edge (America’s Test Kitchen, “Ooni Volt vs. Breville Pizzaiolo: Battle Of the Pizza Ovens | Gear Heads”; Pala Pizza, “The 6 Best INDOOR Electric Pizza Ovens | Reviewed With Preheat Tests”). Pala Pizza says the dual burners make New York pies easy. ATK liked the original Volt’s simple dials, indicator lights and timer, and its control for shifting heat between top and bottom.
ATK gave the Breville a slight win on ease of use because it includes a peel that fits and a carbon steel pan with a removable handle. The original Volt came with no accessories, and its opening was too narrow for ATK’s recommended peel, so you’d buy one separately (America’s Test Kitchen, “Ooni Volt vs. Breville Pizzaiolo: Battle Of the Pizza Ovens | Gear Heads”).
Size, Stone and Versatility
ATK found the original Volt about 24 inches deep, roughly the depth of a kitchen counter, and about 40 pounds, and it needs about six inches of clearance on the sides and back (America’s Test Kitchen, “Ooni Volt vs. Breville Pizzaiolo: Battle Of the Pizza Ovens | Gear Heads”). The Breville is almost six inches shallower and just under 30 pounds, so it wins on size. Inside, the Volt’s 13 1/4 in square stone gives more margin for launching and fits bigger pies; the Breville’s 11 3/4 in round stone meant ATK split its two-pizza dough recipe into three smaller pies. ATK gave versatility to the Ooni.
Ooni says the Volt 2 has a 30% smaller footprint than the original with the same 13-inch cooking space, and can fit in a standard kitchen cupboard (Ooni, Volt 2 Getting Started). Tom Voyage, a YouTube pizza reviewer who was gifted the oven, measured it at 545 mm deep and 17.6 kg (Tom Voyage, “OONI VOLT 2 vs NINJA ARTISAN Electric Outdoor Pizza Oven – Review & Comparison”). He also noticed steam venting from the back and suggests not running it under a cupboard. Check your counter depth before you buy.

Who Should Buy Which
- Ooni Volt 2: the better value for very hot Neapolitan pies, bigger pizzas and back-to-back baking.
- Breville Smart Oven Pizzaiolo (BPZ820): for smaller kitchens and cooks who want separate top and deck control, a crust-only setting and included accessories. Read our Breville Pizzaiolo Review.
ATK’s own advice: “If one is cheaper, go for that one. If you want a smaller model, go for the Breville. If you want a little more wiggle room, go for the Ooni” (America’s Test Kitchen, “Ooni Volt vs. Breville Pizzaiolo: Battle Of the Pizza Ovens | Gear Heads”).

Notes and disclosure
Note: Prices come from Amazon listings at time of writing. Temperatures and wattages are the manufacturers’ listed figures unless a reviewer is credited. ATK and Pala Pizza tested the original Ooni Volt; Bob Diff tested the Volt 2 with early access from Ooni. These are the creators’ findings, not hands-on claims from me. An earlier version of this page swapped the two ovens’ size and weight and described the Volt 2 as an indoor-outdoor oven; both have been corrected.
