Shark’s PowerDetect has “the most suction and the most features” of any Shark cordless tested by Vacuum Wars, a YouTube testing channel that bought both versions. It scored perfectly in the channel’s carpet deep-clean and hair-tangle tests, and Vacuum Wars later ranked the Clean & Empty version No. 1 for pet hair.
The standard IP1255 listed at $477.79 and the IP3251 Clean & Empty, with an auto-empty dock, at $549.00 on Amazon on Oct 17, 2026. Vacuum Wars said the main difference is the dock. This review covers the test results, how the sensors work, and which version to buy.

How the PowerDetect Tested
Debris Pickup
Vacuum Wars called it “a near perfect vacuum as far as debris pickup.” The updated DuoClean head is especially good on hard floors, where it dusts fine debris “nearly perfectly” and still takes extra-large debris other vacuums can’t (Vacuum Wars, “Shark Cordless Powerdetect Clean and Empty Vacuum Review”).
Carpet
It got a perfect score in the carpet deep-clean test, in which sand is embedded in medium-pile carpet and the bin is weighed before and after.
Hair
It picked up pet and human hair “almost like magic,” and its comb-based anti-tangle head did perfectly in the tests.
Suction
It posted the highest sealed suction Vacuum Wars has measured from a Shark cordless. Unsealed suction at the floor head came in a bit below average, though hard-floor pickup scores stayed well above average.
Battery
Shark lists 70 minutes on low. Vacuum Wars measured 13 minutes on max with the floor head, matching the Dyson Gen5 Detect, and estimated 30 to 40 minutes in auto mode depending on how much carpet you have.
The “Detect” Sensors, Explained
- Floor detection: adjusts roller speed and suction for hard floors or carpet.
- DirtDetect: boosts suction in a particularly dirty area.
- DirectionDetect: adjusts suction for forward and backward strokes.
- EdgeDetect: a side sensor raises suction near edges.
The French Glow, a home-gear YouTuber, said this makes auto mode “more sophisticated,” sensing corners and debris and adjusting suction. The PowerDetect also has a quiet mode for use at night (The French Glow, “Shark PowerDetect Cordless vs Dyson V15 – Features, Performance, and Review”).
Clean & Empty or Standard?
With the IP3251 Clean & Empty, setting the vacuum on its stand sucks the bin contents into the base. Vacuum Wars liked that the base is bagless, “exceedingly rare” in the industry, and that a switch lets you turn auto-empty off. The French Glow pointed out a spot for an odor-neutralizer pod in the base. The IP1255 skips the dock for $71.21 less.
Other Features
- MultiFLEX wand: bends to reach under furniture.
- LED headlights on the floor head.
- Handling: Vacuum Wars cited an ergonomic handle and responsive swivel, with high usability scores.
- Battery display: a basic LED readout rather than a runtime number.
Why It Ranked No. 1 for Pet Hair
Vacuum Wars built its pet-hair ranking around a 14-inch hair-tangle test, then weighed soft rollers, bin size, green or LED lights and sealed filtration, which keeps dander inside the vacuum. The PowerDetect Clean & Empty had the highest suction on the list, perfect hair-tangle and carpet deep-clean scores, and perfect pickup on hard floors and carpet. It also had perfect filtration and was the only top-five vacuum with its own auto-empty dock (Vacuum Wars, “We Tested 100+ Cordless Vacuums—These 5 Are Best for Pet Hair (2026)”). Vacuum Wars noted it’s much cheaper than the Dysons, though still somewhat expensive.
PowerDetect vs Dyson
In The French Glow’s comparison with the Dyson V15, the Dyson weighed close to 6.7 lb, “only a pound less” than the Shark (The French Glow, “Shark PowerDetect Cordless vs Dyson V15 – Features, Performance, and Review”). Against the newer V16, Vacuum Wars measured more usable suction and longer max runtime from the Dyson. For the full matchup, see Dyson V16 vs Shark PowerDetect.
Things to Know Before You Buy
Vacuum Wars measured max-power noise a little above average, and handle weight a little above average because of the larger battery. The French Glow said the weight sits low, so you may prefer to lift it from the middle (The French Glow, “Shark PowerDetect Cordless vs Dyson V15 – Features, Performance, and Review”). Vacuum Wars’ overall takeaway was “a lot of value,” at almost half the cost of a premium Dyson.
