Affordable smart blinds now cost a fraction of designer systems. Shane Whatley, an Apple Home YouTuber, priced a small SwitchBot roller shade with solar panel at just under $150 during a launch discount, against about $335 for a similar SmartWings shade and more than $750 for Lutron Serena (Shane Whatley, “The First ADJUSTABLE Smart Shades! [SwitchBot’s NEW Roller Shades]”). SwitchBot sponsored his video and sent the shades.
Paul Hibbert, a UK smart home reviewer, titled his SmartWings review “Smart Home Blinds You Can Afford” and called them the nicest blinds he has tried, in a video SmartWings sponsored (Paul Hibbert, “FINALLY… Smart Home Blinds You Can Afford | Smartwings”). On Amazon on October 16, 2026, the picks below started at $119.00 per window.

SwitchBot Roller Shade: Adjustable, With a Catch
Whatley says SwitchBot’s shade is the first adjustable smart roller shade (Shane Whatley, “The First ADJUSTABLE Smart Shades! [SwitchBot’s NEW Roller Shades]”). It comes in four sizes covering windows from 23 to 72.8 inches wide, in gray or white, and only in 100% blackout fabric. Because you resize it at home, you don’t need the precise measurements made-to-order shades require.
- Resizing: you loosen the frame to fit the window, then a cutter end cap trims the fabric while the app rolls the shade. A strip and a supplied stapler attach the bottom bar.
- Time: Whatley called the resizing “extremely tedious”; three shades took him about three to four hours, getting faster after the first.
- Hanging: easy, with spring-loaded brackets and a quick calibration in the app.
- Power: USB-C, with an optional solar panel that he says adds about $30; without it, SwitchBot says a charge lasts about 8 months.
- Control: Bluetooth, so you need a SwitchBot hub for Matter, Apple Home, Alexa or Google. Grouped shades moved in sync, and a quiet mode slows them down.
- Looks: the adjustable sections on the top and bottom bars are slightly visible.
He thinks the $199.99 list price for the small size is a bit high and sees about $150 as the right price, so he suggests waiting for sales such as Prime Day or Black Friday (Shane Whatley, “The First ADJUSTABLE Smart Shades! [SwitchBot’s NEW Roller Shades]”). The extra-large size with solar was just under $230 at the time of his video. Adjustable shades also suit rooms with several slightly different window sizes.
SmartWings: Made to Measure at a Lower Price
Hibbert says SmartWings has brought prices down far enough to compete with adjustable shades you cut yourself (Paul Hibbert, “FINALLY… Smart Home Blinds You Can Afford | Smartwings”). You choose the fabric, valance, size (up to 114 inches wide, he says) and motor: Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread/Matter or Alexa. Power can be USB-C, solar or power over Ethernet, which he believes is an industry first. His solar-powered kitchen blinds had stayed at 100% charge.
His setup was harder: the Matter code wasn’t in the manual, and the Thread blind took about 10 tries to join Home Assistant, though it has worked since. “If I was going to do this over, I would just get Zigbee blinds,” he said. He estimated SwitchBot’s adjustable shade at about £81 cheaper for comparable options, but it needs a SwitchBot hub (Paul Hibbert, “FINALLY… Smart Home Blinds You Can Afford | Smartwings”).
DIY Smart Home Guy, a smart home channel whose SmartWings shades were sent free, says he installed one in under four minutes and that you can order direct or on Amazon (DIY Smart Home Guy, “BUSTED! 7 Myths about smart shades—SmartWings motorized roller shade review”). He priced a similar Lutron shade at over $1,200, about twice as much, and says the built-in battery lasts 3 to 6 months per charge. His annoyances: no manual way to open the shade if the battery dies or the remote is lost, and the solar panel isn’t pretty. See our SmartWings Review.

Eve MotionBlinds: Smart Blinds for Apple Home
Tech-Up, a smart home channel that received a review unit from a MotionBlinds reseller, says each Eve MotionBlinds shade took no more than 10 minutes to install, mostly four screws and clip-in mounts (Tech-Up, “Eve MotionBlinds – Full Review”). Setup runs through the free Eve app with a HomeKit code, and the motor uses Thread, falling back to Bluetooth. Tech-Up says the battery is meant to last about 8 to 12 months, and that it charged its earlier MotionBlinds no more than twice in just over two years. Custom sizes come through MotionBlinds resellers.
How to Choose Affordable Smart Blinds
- Custom vs adjustable: SmartWings and Yoolax are made to order. SwitchBot’s shade adjusts to fit, so you skip precise measuring but spend time resizing.
- Protocol: Hibbert would pick Zigbee for SmartWings. Matter and Thread models work with Apple Home, Google and Alexa but need a Thread border router; SwitchBot needs its own hub.
- Power: batteries last from about 3 months to a year per charge depending on the brand and use; solar panels remove charging.
- Light control: pick blackout fabric for bedrooms; see Blackout Smart Blinds for Sleep.
Affordable Smart Blinds by Budget
- Lowest cost per window: Yoolax Motorized Blinds (custom size).
- Best all-round: SmartWings Motorized Roller Shade (100% blackout).
- Odd window sizes: SwitchBot Roller Shade.
- Renters: SwitchBot Blind Tilt + Hub 3 Kit or SwitchBot Curtain 3 Rod (2-pack) clip onto what you have.
- Apple Home with existing roller blinds: Eve MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit (Matter).
