Blackout Smart Blinds for Better Sleep: 2026 Picks

Blackout smart blinds put bedroom darkness on a schedule, and Paul Hibbert, a UK smart home reviewer, called SmartWings’ cellular blind “an amazing blackout blind” with “no way for lights to pass through.”

6 Months Later, a long-term review channel, found the opposite lesson in its own main bedroom: blinds that change on their own in the afternoon aren’t ideal when you want to sleep in, so it keeps those mostly closed or set by hand. On Amazon on October 16, 2026, blackout-capable options below started at $119.00.

What YouTube Reviewers Found With Bedroom Smart Blinds

These points are paraphrased from the video transcripts and credited to each creator. They are the creators’ own findings and opinions, not mine.

  • 6 Months Later: blinds that are usually closed or set by hand are the ones it says did not need to be smart.
  • Paul Hibbert: SmartWings cell blinds are also a strong blackout option.
  • Shane Whatley: SwitchBot’s solar panel has a light sensor you can use for automations, such as closing when sunlight gets strong.
  • Tech-Up, a smart home channel: each Eve MotionBlinds blind joins your Thread network and shows up in the Eve app.

SmartWings Blackout Blinds: What Paul Hibbert Found

SmartWings sponsored both of Hibbert’s videos and sent the blinds. On the cellular blind, he says a silver coating inside the fabric leaves “no way for lights to pass through,” and that if it were pressed up against the window it wouldn’t let any light in at all; he’d mounted his outside the frame (Paul Hibbert, “Save £400 A Year Using SmartWings Cell Blinds”). Cellular blinds also trap air in their pockets, which he says helps with noise and with keeping heat in during winter and out in summer.

In his roller and zebra blind review, he calls SmartWings’ blackout fabric “absolutely imperative” for a baby who wakes at the slightest light (Paul Hibbert, “FINALLY… Smart Home Blinds You Can Afford | Smartwings”). Power options include USB-C, solar panels and Power over Ethernet. He found remote range excellent. His caveat for bedrooms: the motor is quiet, but not quiet enough to run in his son’s room, only outside the door. He says he would still buy them with his own money.

SwitchBot Roller Shade: Quietest for a Bedroom

SwitchBot sponsored Shane Whatley’s review and sent three shades with solar panels (Shane Whatley, “The First ADJUSTABLE Smart Shades! [SwitchBot’s NEW Roller Shades]”). Whatley, a YouTuber focused on Apple Home, notes the shades come only in gray or white and only in 100% blackout fabric, a plus for bedrooms.

  • Quiet drift mode: moves the shade slower but much quieter. Hibbert said this mode is quiet enough to run in a sleeping child’s room ({PS}).
  • Adjustable width: you resize and cut the shade yourself with the included cutter, so measurements needn’t be exact. His three took about three to four hours in total.
  • Solar panel: about $30 extra, with a built-in light sensor that can close shades when sunlight gets strong.
  • Grouping: grouped shades move in sync, and a $20 SwitchBot remote can sit on a bedside table.

He priced the small size with solar at just under $150 during a launch discount, versus about $335 for a similar SmartWings and over $750 for Lutron Serena.

What 6 Months Later Learned About Bedroom Blinds

Josh Teder of 6 Months Later automated all 18 windows with Lutron Serena wood blinds, using a Lutron media discount (6 Months Later, “Should You Put Smart Blinds on Every Window? – Lutron Smart Blinds Review”). Six months on, he’s glad he did most of them, but says the bedroom taught him a lesson. Lutron’s Natural Light Optimization tilts blinds automatically with the sun, but having them open in the afternoon isn’t ideal when you want to sleep in. He now keeps the bedroom blinds mostly closed or sets them by hand, and set them never to open fully while still tilting to let some light in.

For sleep, that suggests a simple setup: a fixed bedtime close and a fixed wake-up open, rather than sun-tracking automation in the bedroom.

Retrofit a Blackout Blind You Already Own

If you already have a blackout roller you like, the Eve MotionBlinds kit adds a motor. Tech-Up, which received a review unit from a MotionBlinds reseller, says each shade took no more than 10 minutes to install, and the battery is meant to last about 8 to 12 months (Tech-Up, “Eve MotionBlinds – Full Review”).

Blackout Smart Blinds Bedtime Setup

  • Mount inside the frame where possible; Hibbert says his blind would block all light pressed against the window, but he had mounted it outside the frame.
  • Schedule a gentle open: use a slow or quiet mode for the morning open.
  • Skip sun-tracking in the bedroom, per 6 Months Later.
  • Keep a manual control: a bedside remote handles naps and late mornings.
