In the ecobee Premium vs Enhanced decision, the Premium adds a SmartSensor in the box, a built-in voice assistant speaker, an indoor air quality monitor and extra wiring terminals, while day-to-day use is almost identical, according to One Hour Smart Home, a YouTube channel focused on smart-home installs.

What they share
One Hour Smart Home, which tested both for a couple of months, said the two operate almost identically once installed: both have larger screens than earlier ecobees, enhanced occupancy sensing, the same scheduling and temperature controls, and remote control from your phone. Both include a Power Extender Kit for homes without a C-wire, and both work with Siri, Google and Alexa voice assistants. ecobee lists up to 26% savings for both. Several details below also come from {Y(“EFyapCg-J9E”,”Smart Home Solver”)}’s review of the Premium, which ecobee sponsored; he said he already owned three ecobee thermostats bought with his own money.

Room sensor
Only the Premium includes a room sensor, which reports temperature and occupancy so the thermostat can tell which rooms are in use and heat or cool them more accurately, One Hour Smart Home said. You can add sensors to the Enhanced; the ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack was $99.99. Smart Home Solver, a YouTube smart-home reviewer, uses Follow Me mode with his sensors to average only occupied rooms.
Built-in voice assistant
The Premium has a speaker and microphone so it works like a smart speaker: you can control the thermostat by voice, ask questions and control other smart devices, One Hour Smart Home said. The Enhanced works with voice assistants through your other speakers but has no microphone of its own. Smart Home Solver noted you do not have to enable the built-in assistant if you do not want it.
Air quality monitor
The Premium’s indoor air quality sensor tracks carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds. One Hour Smart Home said the VOC alerts gave him a heads-up to open a window during cleaning or painting. Smart Home Solver tested it with rubbing alcohol and even toast, and saw the reading return to clean after airing out. ecobee’s listing adds filter-change reminders.
Wiring terminals and compatibility
One Hour Smart Home said the Premium’s additional terminals make it compatible with the most HVAC systems, including dual-fuel setups and accessories such as humidifiers, dehumidifiers or a UV lamp, which makes complex installs easier. Both handle two-stage heating and cooling, furnaces, heat pumps and boilers. ecobee lists 95% compatibility for the Premium versus 90% for the Enhanced; use ecobee’s online checker to confirm.
Design
Smart Home Solver described the Premium’s zinc body as hiding fingerprints and looking good in a main living area, with a display he said is 50% larger than the previous generation and glass that feels like a smartphone. One Hour Smart Home said both are similar in size and shape but the Premium’s metal ring gives it a nicer finish.
Energy-saving features on both
Both models run ecobee’s eco+ features, which Smart Home Solver said use the thermostat’s occupancy sensing and any room sensors to decide when the home is empty and switch to away settings. He said his energy use roughly quadruples when his air conditioning starts, so running it less when nobody is home adds up. Other options include adjusting for humidity and time-of-use pricing; he used a time-of-use plan for years and said it saved a lot on his power bill. ecobee’s Enhanced listing adds that it can preheat or precool before you arrive and learns your temperature preferences.
- Adjustable temperature swing: Smart Home Solver sets his to 2 degrees so the system runs less often, which he said reduces wear.
- Home IQ data: he finds ecobee’s graphs helpful for spotting where he uses more energy than expected.
- Door and window sensors: ecobee’s optional contact sensors can pause heating and cooling when a door or window is left open, he said.
- Wide compatibility: ecobee lists Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit and SmartThings support for the Enhanced.
Who should buy which
- Premium: homes with hot and cold rooms that will use the sensor, anyone wanting an air quality monitor or a voice assistant on the wall, and complex HVAC systems.
- Enhanced: simpler systems and buyers who will not use the sensor, speaker or air monitor, One Hour Smart Home said.
- Essential: the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential lists up to 23% savings and 85% compatibility for $139.99, with the Power Extender Kit sold separately.
One Hour Smart Home’s verdict: the extra money for the Premium is a great value given everything packed in. For how ecobee stacks up against Google, see Ecobee vs Nest Thermostat.
