Design and screen
Smart Home Solver initially liked the Nest’s look, which he compared to a Pixel Watch on the wall, but after living with both he preferred the ecobee because its flat screen with adjustable brightness was easier to read in his bright room. Eric Welander said the Nest’s big screen was easy to read from farther away where he mounted it and that it looks less like electronics on the wall. Google offers it in multiple finishes; ecobee’s Premium has one brushed finish, Smart Home Solver said.
Controls
The ecobee is a touchscreen; Smart Home Solver said ecobee’s redesigned tap-and-arrow controls are intuitive. Nest uses its classic rotating ring and press. Eric Welander praised the tactile feedback of the metal ring, and Smart Home Solver said Nest was just as fast for a quick temperature change, though menus take longer.
Apps and learning
Both apps handle presets and schedules. Smart Home Solver said ecobee allows schedule changes 30 minutes apart versus 60 minutes for Nest and has a more detailed energy dashboard, while Nest’s new Suggestions mode, which asks before changing your schedule, is the best of both worlds for a learning thermostat. 6 Months Later added that the Google Home app explains why the thermostat is running and what adjustment it is making.
Room sensors
Both include a remote sensor. Smart Home Solver said ecobee’s sensors detect occupancy, enabling Follow Me to average only occupied rooms, which Nest’s temperature sensors do not offer. Eric Welander noted Nest supports up to six sensors per thermostat and that older Nest sensors still work. Extra ecobee sensors come in the ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack; 6 Months Later priced a Nest three-pack at $99.
Smart-home integration
Nest supports Matter, so you can add it to Apple Home or Home Assistant; 6 Months Later called it a big deal, and Eric Welander found it fast and reliable in Apple Home. Both note you set it up first in the Google Home app with a Google account. Smart Home Solver found ecobee’s HomeKit integration in Home Assistant exposed more, including presets, fan, occupancy and remote sensors, running locally.
C-wire and wiring
Smart Home Solver said Nest is the option if your home lacks a C-wire, since its rechargeable battery charges from your system, though a C-wire is better when available. ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit with the Premium and Enhanced for homes without one. See Smart Thermostat Without a C-Wire.
Extra features
- Nest: Dynamic Farsight shows the time or weather from across the room; 6 Months Later found himself checking the weather on it as he left home. It also offers sun compensation and Airwave, which runs the fan after cooling.
- ecobee: adjustable temperature swing, a built-in air quality monitor and Siri and Alexa built in, per ecobee’s listing; Smart Home Solver said ecobee wins on extra features.
Installation
Eric Welander said Nest and ecobee both set the gold standard in their apps for walking you through different wiring scenarios, and that installation is not hard if you follow the steps. Smart Home Solver said installing the ecobee Premium was easy: attach the large included trim plate with two screws, connect the wires and snap on the thermostat. 6 Months Later said his Nest took about 40 minutes and recommended a cordless drill. Both include trim plates to cover marks left by an old thermostat.
Which should you buy?
Smart Home Solver’s verdict: get the Nest if you want a distinctive design, schedule suggestions or have no C-wire; otherwise the ecobee Premium is the clear winner and feels like the smarter option. 6 Months Later, after six months, said he could not be happier with the Nest.
