Medical Terms Prefixes Memorized

  • hypo- = under
  • in- = not
  • infra- = beneath
  • inter- = occurring between
  • intra- = within

The key idea with being able to memorize med terms and vocabulary words is the create pictures for those words.

Just take both the picture for the word and the picture for the definition and visualize an interaction between the two like we did above.

hypo = under

hypo = hippo
under = going under

Story: Hippo went under the water

hypodontia = A congenital or acquired condition of having fewer than the normal complement of teeth

in- = not

in- = Native American Indian
not = knot

Story: Native American Indian tying a knot

Term Use
incurable = Denoting a disease or morbid process unresponsive to medical or surgical treatment.

infra- = situated beneath

infra- = infrared
situated beneath = below something

Story: Infrared cat was below the table

infratemporal= Below the temporal fossa of the skull.

inter- = occurring between

inter- = inner-tube
occurring between = in the between

Story: He was in between two inner tubes

Term Use
intercalary = Occurring, or interposed, between parts.

intra- = situated within

intra- = in truck
situated within = inside

Story: He was inside of the truck

intrabronchial= Within the bronchi or bronchial tubes.
