How to Start a 3D Printing Etsy Shop: Rules, Fees and First Sales

Before listing a single 3D print on Etsy, check the design rule. Since a June 10, 2025 update to Etsy’s Creativity Standards, items made with 3D printers must be produced from the seller’s own original design, Value Added Resource reported. Selling downloaded or commercially licensed models is no longer allowed.

Shops that follow the rule can grow quickly. Dev Creates, a YouTube channel that documents its Etsy shop, says it reached 550 sales and Star Seller status in about a year. It also said Etsy’s own search, not ads, brought most of its visits once the shop got going.

Here are the rules, fees and setup steps, plus what two shops learned about ads and early sales.

Etsy’s Rules for 3D Printed Items

  • Original designs only. Under Etsy’s “made by a seller” category, items made with computerized tools like 3D printers must come from your own design (Value Added Resource).
  • Use your own photos. Etsy Help says items made by a seller must use the seller’s own photographs in listings.
  • Reselling is out. Etsy does not allow reselling mass-produced items.

How to Start a 3D Printing Etsy Shop, Step by Step

  • 1. Design or commission your products. Slant 3D, a print-farm company, says you can design files yourself or hire a designer (Slant 3D, “Start a 3D Printing Etsy Store From Scratch | Things You Should Know”). Make sure any design you sell meets Etsy’s original-design rule.
  • 2. Shoot good photos. The photo is the thumbnail people click on, Slant 3D says. Use some plain, solid-background shots plus “in context” shots next to books, mugs or flowers that show scale. A modern phone is enough.
  • 3. Write real descriptions. Slant 3D warns against generic copy and says to fill in descriptive tags and a SKU for each listing.
  • 4. Price for the market and your costs. Slant 3D priced many of its simple vases around $15.
  • 5. Budget for ads at the start. Slant 3D suggests $50 to $100 of marketing budget to start, at about $5 to $10 a day. In its first week, it spent $15.13 on ads and made one $18 sale, which it called a good start for a brand-new store.
  • 6. Read your analytics. If click-through rates are low, Slant 3D suggests reworking thumbnails and titles.

What Shops Learned About Etsy Ads

Dev Creates said Etsy let it spend more on ads once the shop showed it was serious, and that revenue rose with spend. It reported a return on ad spend of $2.38 in revenue per $1 spent. In one November, ads brought about 18,000 views, 545 visitors, 31 orders and roughly $500 in revenue (Dev Creates, “Selling 3D Prints on Etsy for 1 Year – My Results”).

Later, in a month with about 3,000 visits and more than 250 orders, Dev Creates said Etsy itself brought about 75% of visits. It credited clear titles, descriptions and photos, which it said also helped its listings show up in Google. That month, it spent almost $400 on ads for almost $1,500 in ad-driven revenue and about 80 orders (Dev Creates, “Selling 3D Prints on Etsy for 1 Year – My Results”).

Sales can be uneven early on. Kevin Heelan, who sells three made-to-order products on Etsy, reported $639.95 in his first month and $1,610.98 in his best (Kevin Heelan, “The Surprising Reality of Running a 3D Printing Business from Home”).

Star Seller and Shipping

Dev Creates says you should send tracked items if you want to become a Star Seller, and it reached the badge within its first year (Dev Creates, “Selling 3D Prints on Etsy for 1 Year – My Results”).
