3D printed hooks can be remarkably strong: a tuned PLA hook carried just over 250 kg in a test rig built by 3D Maker Noob, a YouTube channel that designed hooks for Polymaker’s strongest-hook contest (3D Maker Noob, “How Strong Can A 3D Printed PLA Hook Be?!?”). Everyday hooks should carry far less, but the same design and slicer lessons apply.
The key is printing the hook flat and adding perimeters rather than infill, so the printed lines follow the internal forces, according to Stefan of CNC Kitchen, a YouTube channel that tests 3D printing materials and hardware (CNC Kitchen, “The strongest hook wins a $1,000 3D printer!”). Reddit users add that PETG is safer than PLA for anything that hangs for months. Here is how to print hooks that hold, and where to use them.

How to Print a Strong 3D Printed Hook
| Setting | Why | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Print it lying flat | Printed lines follow the hook curve and carry the load | CNC Kitchen |
| More perimeters, less infill | Walls carry the stress in a hook | CNC Kitchen |
| Avoid under-extrusion | Bending adds shear that separates weak perimeters | CNC Kitchen |
| Slower speeds, full flow | Better layer bonding | 3D Maker Noob |
| PETG for constant loads | PLA creeps and droops over time | Reddit users |
| Rounded inside corners | Fillets spread the stress | General design practice |
Hook Design Lessons From the Strongest-Hook Contest
Polymaker’s contest rules, as CNC Kitchen explained them, were strict: one piece of PolyMax PLA, a 0.4 mm nozzle, no more than 50 g, no post-processing and an open hook with no closed holes (CNC Kitchen, “The strongest hook wins a $1,000 3D printer!”). Stefan compared the challenge to climbing carabiners, which carry the most when loaded closed and much less when loaded sideways or with the gate open, because bending adds stress. His design tips:
- Keep the lever arm between the load points and the hook’s sides as short as possible.
- Make the attachment lug thick enough that it won’t shear out.
- Consider a shape that closes into a loop once it starts to deform, like a carabiner gate, which he expected to beat any open C or S shape.
- Remember sideways loading is much weaker than loading in the intended direction.
3D Maker Noob’s Hook Tests
3D Maker Noob modeled three hooks in Fusion 360: a simple O-style hook, an S hook and a self-locking loop with a 1 mm gap that locks onto itself as it’s pulled (3D Maker Noob, “How Strong Can A 3D Printed PLA Hook Be?!?”). He built a test jig from a winch, tie-down straps and a 300 kg handheld scale clamped to a wooden beam. The self-locking design was the clear winner, and he noted the hooks consistently gave way at the same spots, which showed him where to add strength.
Then he tuned the slicer, in his case IdeaMaker (3D Maker Noob, “How Strong Can A 3D Printed PLA Hook Be?!?”):
- First round: 10% rectilinear infill and alternating 2 to 3 perimeters at 0.25 mm layers for a baseline.
- Second round: modifier boxes to add density at the weak spots, 0.3 mm layers, 5 to 6 shells, slower speeds, six top and bottom layers and concentric solid layers, at 34.7 g.
- Final round: 100% concentric infill, 0.5 mm extrusion width, about 75% cooling and speeds around 40 mm/s, at about 49.6 g.
That final hook carried just over 250 kg before his wooden beam began buckling. He wore safety glasses for these tests because of flying fragments, which is good advice for anyone load-testing prints.
3D Printed Hook Filament Guide
| Use | Filament | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor, light load | PLA | Stiff and easy, but creeps under constant load |
| Constant load, bumps, flex | PETG | Tougher; handles creep and impact better |
| Hot garage, car, outdoors | ASA | Heat and UV resistant; best in an enclosed printer |
| Grip, soft contact | TPU | Rubber-like |
Safety: 3D printed hooks are not rated like store-bought hardware. Contest results are short pulls, not months of hanging. Don’t use printed hooks for overhead loads, TVs, cabinets, ladders or anything that could hurt someone if it gave way.

3D Printed Hooks: Frequently Asked Questions
How strong is a 3D printed hook?
A tuned contest hook in PLA carried just over 250 kg briefly in 3D Maker Noob’s rig. Everyday hooks should carry much lighter loads.
PLA or PETG for 3D printed hooks?
PETG for hooks that carry weight all the time; PLA droops over time.
How should I orient a 3D printed hook?
Flat on the bed, so the lines follow the curve.
Infill or walls for hooks?
Walls. Add perimeters first, per CNC Kitchen.
What shape makes the strongest hook?
A short lever arm and a thick lug help; CNC Kitchen expected a carabiner-like shape that closes under load to beat open C or S hooks.
