The best 3D printed pegboard accessories are short, stubby hooks and locking mounts that print flat, because they hold just as reliably in IKEA Skadis slots without tearing out, according to Slant 3D, a YouTube channel run by a print-farm engineer (Slant 3D, “Hacking the IKEA SKADIS Pegboard”). Printed hooks also cost far less than IKEA’s, which run about a dollar each, said Ryan Tuscher, a maker who designed his own Skadis mount system (Ryan Tuscher, “I Solved Two SKADIS Problems”).
Beyond Skadis, fully printable wall systems such as Multiboard let you print the board itself. Below are the main pegboard systems, what to print, how to design hooks that hold and what creators learned building printed walls.
Which 3D Printed Pegboard System?
Prices from Amazon at time of writing. I may earn a commission from links, at no cost to you.
| System | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pegboard (1/4 in holes) | Hardware-store board; print your own hooks | Cheap, everywhere |
| IKEA Skadis | Slotted board with a huge library of printed add-ons | Desks, craft and electronics |
| Multiboard | Printable modular tiles, bins and connectors | Building a whole wall from prints |
| Fully printed Skadis-style panels | Print the board in tiles | Small spaces; add-ons to a store board |
Best 3D Printed Pegboard Accessories
- Screwdriver and plier racks
- Bins and cups for bits and small parts
- Tape and tape-measure holders
- Drill and driver holders
- Battery mounts (see battery holders)
- Wrench racks (see socket and wrench organizers)
- Shelves, phone stands, mic mounts and controller displays
Huelle Tech ENG, a tech channel, printed Skadis holders for tape, a tape measure, screwdrivers and a double battery holder from Printables. He found “every possible holder and little shelf” already designed by the community (Huelle Tech ENG, “I 3D Printed My Own IKEA SKÅDIS Accessories”). Seth Altobelli, a woodworking and maker channel, printed a full set of tool holders for a standard pegboard (Seth Altobelli, “3D Printed Pegboard Toolholders”).
How to Make 3D Printed Pegboard Hooks Stronger
Slant 3D showed seven ways to design Skadis hooks. Printed flat, long thin hooks can snap at the layer lines, while printing on the side with slicer supports can ruin the fit. Its fixes include short “stumpy” hooks that print flush to the bed without supports, designed-in supports that are crisper and cheaper than slicer supports, and flexing snap tabs (Slant 3D, “Hacking the IKEA SKADIS Pegboard”).
Lessons From Designing a Skadis Mount
Ryan Tuscher spent years on his “click mount” for Skadis, and his prototypes show what trips up printed hooks (Ryan Tuscher, “I Solved Two SKADIS Problems”):
- Elephant’s foot ruins tight joints. A dovetail hook kept binding because the squished first layer left a burr. Orca Slicer’s elephant-foot compensation fixed it.
- Tiny first layers print unreliably. A twist-in hook had too little bed contact and was scrapped.
- Printing upright costs strength. A version printed vertically needed supports, had a poor finish and weaker layer lines.
- Cooling can lift parts. His mount kept coming loose around layer 10 until he set the part-cooling fans to ramp up after several layers.
- Lock accessories in place. A gentle press fit held the mount, and a locking pin stopped shelves sliding up and down.
His father’s simpler square-peg design worked well enough for pen and pill-bottle holders, Tuscher said, but wasted space against the board and could get bumped loose.
Building a Printed Pegboard Wall
Huelle Tech printed nine Skadis-style panels but chose a version without corner holes, so they were hard to join. He ended up buying IKEA’s largest Skadis board (76 by 56 cm) and kept the printed panels as an add-on. He then printed feet and connectors to make it freestanding instead of drilling, using about 3 kg of leftover filament (Huelle Tech ENG, “I 3D Printed My Own IKEA SKÅDIS Accessories”).
Distracted by Design, a channel about maker builds, built a wall system inspired by Adam Savage’s advice to keep tools visible. He found a screw more reliable than a hardware-free design, added magnets as a fail-safe where tolerances mattered, and load-tested mounts with a full 2-gallon bucket and a chair (Distracted by Design, “I Finally Listened To Adam Savage About Storage”).
Multiboard: A Fully 3D Printed Pegboard System
MultiBuild, the channel behind Multiboard, describes it as three subsystems: tiles that take threads, pegboard accessories and snaps (every hole is threaded); Multibin, shells with swappable inserts that also form drawers; and Multipoint, a connector for attaching bins to tiles, to each other or to walls (MultiBuild, “The Last 3D Printed Storage System You’ll Ever Need: Multiboard”). The creator said about 95% of the system is free, it uses a custom license rather than open source, and it had passed 979,000 downloads at the time.
Best Filament for 3D Printed Pegboard Hooks
| Use | Filament | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor holders and organizers | PLA | Easy, stiff, cheap |
| Parts that get dropped or flexed | PETG | Tougher, less brittle |
| Hot garage, truck or van | ASA (or ABS) | Higher heat resistance; needs an enclosed printer |
| Soft jaws, grips, non-marring tips | TPU | Rubber-like, won’t scratch |

3D Printed Pegboard Accessories: Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best 3D printed pegboard accessories?
Short stubby hooks, tool racks, bins and locking shelf mounts that print flat.
What filament is best for pegboard hooks?
PETG flexes before it snaps, which suits clips and hooks. PLA works for bins and light holders.
Will 3D printed hooks fit any pegboard?
No. Hooks are made for a specific system; check hole size and spacing, standard 1/4 in, 1/8 in or Skadis slots, before printing.
Is Multiboard better than a pegboard?
It is more flexible but means printing the board too. Pegboard and Skadis are cheaper starting points.
Why does my printed pegboard hook break at the base?
Layer lines run across the hook. Use a stubby design that prints flat, as Slant 3D recommends.
