Dreo’s 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner installs in about 10 minutes with no tools and is close to silent on its lowest fan speed, according to Mike Review, a YouTube product reviewer who used it at home. He said the drain-free design “made this my top choice” when he compared options.
Dreo sells two sizes: the 515S (12,000 BTU ASHRAE, 8,000 SACC) at $449.99 and the 318S (8,000 BTU ASHRAE, 5,000 SACC) at $389.98. This review covers what each model lists, what Mike Review found, what they cost to run and which one fits your room.

What Mike Review Found
Setup
“You just plug it into the wall, attach the exhaust hose to the back, and connect it to the window kit that’s included in the box,” he said. “It like took me only 10 minutes and I didn’t even need any tools” (Mike Review, “Dreo 12,000 BTU Smart Portable Air Conditioners Review”).
Cooling
He said it “cools down a room way faster than I expected,” with a cool breeze “almost instantly” after turning it on.
Noise
He called it “really quiet” for its power, and said that “if you switch it to speed one or night mode, then you really can’t even notice it.” He added that other users who hear it are probably running the fan at its highest setting.
Smart Controls
You can control it from the touchscreen, the remote or the Dreo app, which offers temperature control, mode settings and smart scheduling. It works with Alexa and Google Assistant, and Dreo also lists Siri plus a customizable sleep curve in the app.
Draining
His other AC units needed draining at least once a day. The Dreo “handles water internally and just evaporates,” he said. Dreo lists this for environments under 90% humidity.
Weight
Mike Review put the 12,000 BTU unit at around 60 lb and said its shallow handles make it harder to carry, so pick its spot before you set it up. Dreo lists 62.9 lb for the 515S and 55 lb for the 318S.
515S or 318S: Which Dreo Should You Buy?
- Dreo 515S: for larger bedrooms and living rooms. It has the higher 8,000 SACC rating and 16 ft listed reach.
- Dreo 318S: for small bedrooms and offices. It’s 9.4 lb lighter, 3.3 in. shorter and lists 1,040 W, against 1,500 W for the 515S.
Technology Connections, an engineering YouTube channel, says single-hose portables lose about 25% to hose effects, so compare SACC numbers rather than the bigger ASHRAE figure (Technology Connections, “Portable Air Conditioners – Why you shouldn’t like them”).
Dreo Running Cost
| Model | 8 hours at full listed watts | Cost per night | 30 nights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreo 515S | 12.0 kWh | $2.20 | $66 |
| Dreo 318S | 8.3 kWh | $1.52 | $46 |
These figures use the July 2026 average U.S. residential rate of 18.31 cents per kWh from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and assume full draw the whole time. Compressor cycling once the room is cool lowers real use. See our running cost guide for more models.
Who Might Want Something Else
- You can fit a window unit: Technology Connections measured a 5,000 BTU window unit at 455 W, while a 5,500 BTU portable used “over a kilowatt” (Technology Connections, “Portable Air Conditioners – Why you shouldn’t like them”).
- You’re cooling a hot attic or loft: Silver Cymbal says a true dual-hose unit gives “the most efficiency and of course the fastest cooling” in a really hot space (Silver Cymbal, “Is the Midea DUO Smart Inverter Portable Air Conditioner Worth It?”; Midea provided his unit at no charge). The Dreo models are single hose.
- You want the most SACC per dollar: the Midea 14,000 BTU lists 10,000 SACC for $369.99.
Dreo vs Other Options
For the most efficient portable design, see our dual vs single hose explainer. If you can’t vent a hose at all, Dreo’s TurboCool Misting Fan 765S ($199.99) is an evaporative misting fan, not an AC; see Portable AC Without a Window.
