Medical Terms Prefixes Memorized

  • a-, an- = without
  • ab- = away from
  • ambi- = both
  • atmo- = steam
  • ante- = in front of

The key idea with being able to memorize the meaning of med terms and vocabulary words is the create pictures for those words.

Just take both the picture for the word and the picture for the meaning or definition and visualize an interaction between the two as we did above.

a-, an- = without

a-, an- = apple with ant
without = missing something inside

Story: An Ant cut the Apple open and was missing its core.

anorexia = a lack or loss of appetite

ab- = away from

ab- = abdominal area
away from = pushing away

Story: The guy was showing off his 6 pack abs and you pushed the abs away from you.

Term Use
abaxial = lying outside the axis of any body or part

ambi- = both

ambi- = apple with bambi (deer)
both = both

Story: An apple riding two bambis (deer)

Term Use
ambidextrous = having equal facility in the use of both hands

atmo- = steam

atmo- = hat + ammo
steam = steam

Story: Hat throwing ammo inside of a steam room

Term Use
atmolysis = Separation of mixed gases by passing them through a porous diaphragm, the lighter gases diffusing through at a faster rate.

ante- = in front of

ante- = ant tea
in front of = in front of (action)

Story: Ant pointing to tea in front of him

antecardium = the area on the anterior surface of the body overlying the heart and the lower part of the thorax.
