Medical Terms Prefixes Memorized

  • em- = on
  • epi- = following
  • exo- = outside
  • fore- = front
  • hyper- = beyond

The key idea with being able to memorize med terms and vocabulary words is the create pictures for those words.

 

Just take both the picture for the word and the picture for the definition and visualize an interaction between the two like we did above.

em- = on

em- = M&M
on = on top

Story: Stacking M&M on top of each other

embolism = Obstruction or occlusion of a vessel by an embolus

epi- = following

epi- = elephant happy (smiling)
following = after

Story: The elephants were happily following each other

epidemic = occurring suddenly in numbers clearly in excess of normal expectancy

exo- = outside

exo- = xo (love)
outside = outdoors

Story: She loved (X’s and O’s) being outdoors

exotoxin = a toxin that is secreted or excreted by a living microorganism

fore- = front

fore- = forehead
front = fro on front side

Story: Fro was growing on the front side of his head on his forehead

forearm = the portion of the upper extremity between the elbow and the wrist

hyper- = beyond

hyper- = hat on viper
beyond = bee beyond joy

Story: Viper with hat was very energetic after a bee stung it

hyperalkalinity = A condition of excessive alkalinity
