3D Printed Headphone Stand: Desk, Clamp and Wall Mount Designs

The best 3D printed headphone stand holds headphones securely with a lip so they can’t be knocked off, rests the headband on a broad surface and manages the cable, the three things Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips judged when he picked a winner from 13 community-designed printed stands (Linus Tech Tips, “Headphone Stand Design Contest Part 2”).

Desk stands are the easiest to print, clamp and under-desk hangers save desk space, and wall mounts give the cleanest look. Below are the main styles, what the contest and other creators learned, and print settings that work.

What the Linus Tech Tips Headphone Stand Contest Showed

For a SilverStone design contest, hundreds of entries were submitted, MyMiniFactory printed them, and the 13 finalists went to Sebastian to test with real headphones, including Sennheiser HD 650s with a very long cable (Linus Tech Tips, “Headphone Stand Design Contest Part 2”). His notes on the finalists add up to a checklist for any printed stand:

  • Manage the cable. The most common miss. On a wall mount, a cable with nowhere to go “simply will fall down to the floor.” One favorite had an integrated knob plus a side holder to route the cable up to it.
  • Add a lip. Designs with a lip at the edge kept headphones from sliding off if a neighbor bangs on the wall.
  • Give the headband a broad rest. A narrow, artsy contour would “dent the headphone padding,” he said.
  • Stand off from the wall. Holders set far enough out let large headphones hang without bumping the wall.
  • Plan the mounting. He took points off a design with no mounting method, which he had to stick up with double-sided tape. A screw-in rear plate with a top piece that locks in drew praise.
  • Keep it simple to make. Split, two-piece designs joined by a screw are easy to manufacture and ship; a clever folding design lost out partly on manufacturing difficulty.

The winner was a large “circular” design with a cable slot, a cubby big enough for adapters and room for two pairs of headphones. He acknowledged its size could put some people off.

Clamp and Under-Desk 3D Printed Headphone Stands

Maker’s Muse, a YouTube channel about printable design, modeled a clamp-style holder for his Sennheiser headphones in Fusion 360 (Maker’s Muse, “Custom 3D Printed Headphone Holder using Fusion 360”). He dimensioned the gap to his desk thickness (15.4 mm), kept the top and bottom arms at 5 mm, made the headphone rest 35 mm deep and extruded the part 25 mm thick. He printed it on its side and used 45° chamfers instead of fillets on the outer edges because chamfers print better.

WildRoseBuilds, a channel that makes desk and gaming-setup prints, found most headphone holders “clunky,” so designed one that slides out of the way when not in use. It prints in place with no assembly, and a screw through the outer housing fixes it under the desk (WildRoseBuilds, “7 Cool 3D Printed Things To Upgrade Your Desk / Gaming Setup”).

A popular Printables clamp stand fits desks up to 4.5 cm thick and recommends PLA at 15% infill, and on Reddit’s r/3Dprinting a desk-edge holder drew praise as an unobtrusive alternative to big bust-style stands.

Wall-Mounted 3D Printed Headphone Hangers

Will of the Maker, a YouTube maker channel, went through three versions of a wall hanger for Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones (Will of the Maker, “3D Printed Headphone Wall Mounted Hanger”):

  • His first version had a cable wrap, but he found he wouldn’t actually wrap the cable and folding the headphones to hang them was a nuisance.
  • The final version uses a curve about 5.75 inches in diameter, sits about half an inch closer to the wall than earlier drafts, and has a lip small enough to print without supports.
  • He mounted it with three small strips of adhesive mounting tape, positioned before peeling the backing.

3D Printed Headphone Stand: Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good 3D printed headphone stand?

A secure lip, a broad headband rest and cable management, the qualities Linus Tech Tips judged in its contest.

What filament should I use for a headphone stand?

PLA works indoors; PETG is tougher for heavy headphones on a long hook.

How do I mount a printed headphone hanger without screws?

Will of the Maker used three strips of adhesive mounting tape on his wall hanger.

Should I print a headphone stand on its side?

Yes for hook shapes. Maker’s Muse printed his on its side with 45° chamfers.

Clamp or desk headphone stand?
